What It Treats

Your Lips, Just Better

Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid, a gel similar to a substance your body already makes, to add volume, shape and hydration. Your injector chooses the product and the amount for your proportions and the look you want, from barely-there to noticeably fuller.

Volume

Adds fullness to thin lips or lips that have lost volume with age, with soft results that still move naturally.

Shape & Definition

Defines the lip border and Cupid’s bow, and can gently lift down-turned corners.

Balance & Hydration

Evens out uneven or asymmetric lips and smooths fine vertical lip lines for a softer, more hydrated look.

What to Expect

Your Appointment, Step by Step

Most lip filler visits take about 30 to 45 minutes, including your consultation and numbing.

  1. 01

    Consultation

Your injector reviews your medical history and any past filler, studies your lips and facial proportions, and agrees with you on the shape, the product and how much to use.

  2. 02

    Numbing

A topical numbing cream goes on first. Most lip fillers also contain lidocaine, a local anesthetic, to keep you comfortable during treatment.

  3. 03

    Treatment

Filler is placed in small amounts and shaped as your injector goes, checking symmetry along the way. The injections themselves take about 10 to 15 minutes.

  4. 04

    Aftercare

You’ll leave with personalized aftercare instructions. Avoid pressing or massaging your lips unless your injector tells you to, and give swelling time to settle before judging the result.

Downtime

Plan for a Little Swelling

Most people go back to work or everyday plans the same day. Expect your lips to look swollen and feel tender at first, and to look bigger right after treatment than they will once they settle. Swelling is usually most noticeable in the first couple of days.

Bruising, redness or small bumps can happen and usually fade within about a week. Book at least two weeks before a wedding, photos or another big event. Contact us right away if you notice unusual pain, skin color changes or blanching after treatment.

Results

What You’ll See, How Long It Lasts

You’ll see a difference immediately, but your final result shows once the swelling has gone down, usually after about two weeks.

How long lip filler lasts depends on the product, the amount used and your metabolism. Many clients keep a maintenance schedule of treatment every several months to a year. Because the filler is hyaluronic acid, it can be dissolved if needed. Results vary from person to person.

Good to Know

Lip Filler FAQs

Quick Lips or a full syringe: which should I choose?

UPKEEP Quick Lips® uses half a syringe for a subtle “my lips but better” result, and it’s a popular choice for first-timers. A full syringe gives more noticeable volume and shape. Your injector will recommend an amount based on your lips and goals, and you can always add more at a later visit.

Why are there so many filler brands and prices?

Revanesse, Restylane and Juvederm each make several hyaluronic acid fillers with different textures. Some are softer for natural hydration, and others are firmer for shape and structure. Your injector picks the formula that best suits your lips, and the price depends on the product and amount.

Does lip filler hurt?

Lips are sensitive, but numbing cream and the lidocaine in most fillers keep the treatment comfortable. Most clients describe pressure and a quick pinch rather than real pain.

Will my lips look overdone?

Not unless that’s the look you want. Our injectors build volume gradually and keep your facial proportions in mind. Remember that early swelling makes lips look bigger than the final result. Read more about avoiding lip filler migration.

Can lip filler be dissolved?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if you want to adjust or reverse your result. Our guide to Hylenex filler dissolving explains how it works.

Who shouldn’t get lip filler?

Lip filler isn’t recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with an active cold sore or infection near the lips. If you get cold sores, tell your injector ahead of time. Share your full medical history and allergies at your consultation, and see our Safety & Prescribing page for product safety information.
