Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Make Time for Your Health With UPKEEP Med Spa

October 8, 2026

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, encourage early detection, and support people affected by breast cancer. It is also an opportunity to pause and ask: Are you making time for your health?

At UPKEEP Med Spa, we believe caring for yourself includes caring for your overall well-being. This October, we encourage our community to learn about breast health, stay informed about recommended screenings, and offer meaningful support to others.

Why Breast Cancer Awareness Matters

Busy schedules can make it easy to put off healthcare appointments. Breast Cancer Awareness Month offers a reminder to bring those conversations back into focus.

Early breast cancer often has no symptoms, which is why recommended screening matters even when you feel healthy. Screening can help find breast cancer at an earlier stage, when it may be easier to treat.

Whether you need to discuss your family history or ask when to schedule a mammogram, a conversation with your healthcare provider can help you understand your next step.

Know Your Normal and Pay Attention to Changes

Breast self-awareness means being familiar with how your breasts usually look and feel. Recognizing changes can help you know when to seek medical advice.

Possible signs of breast cancer include:

  • A new lump in the breast or underarm.
  • Swelling or thickening in part of the breast.
  • Changes in breast size or shape.
  • Skin dimpling, redness, or irritation.
  • A nipple that begins turning inward.
  • Nipple discharge other than breast milk.
  • New or persistent breast pain.

Many breast changes have causes other than cancer. Still, new or unusual changes should be evaluated by a healthcare professional rather than waiting for your next screening appointment.

Talk With Your Provider About Breast Cancer Screening

Mammograms are X-rays of the breast that can help detect breast cancer before symptoms appear. Screening mammograms are used for people who do not have breast symptoms.

The right screening plan depends on factors such as your age and risk. Ask your healthcare provider:

  • When should I begin getting mammograms?
  • How often should I be screened?
  • Does my family or personal medical history affect my screening plan?
  • Do I need any additional evaluation?

Being familiar with your breasts does not replace recommended screening. Your provider can help you understand the benefits and limitations of screening and choose an appropriate plan.

If cost or insurance coverage is a barrier, the CDC’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program offers free or low-cost screening to eligible people.

Support Goes Beyond Wearing Pink

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is also about showing up for people living with breast cancer, survivors, caregivers, and families who have experienced loss.

Support does not have to be a grand gesture. Delivering a meal, helping with errands, offering transportation, or simply listening can make everyday responsibilities feel more manageable.

Ask what would be helpful, respect the person’s boundaries, and avoid assumptions about how they feel. A thoughtful check-in can create space for them to share—or give them comfort without requiring a conversation.

Make Awareness Part of Your Routine

You do not need to change everything at once to take a meaningful step. Schedule an overdue healthcare appointment, ask about your family medical history, or save a reliable breast health resource to revisit.

You can also help by sharing accurate information, supporting a reputable breast cancer organization, or checking in with someone affected by the disease.

The goal is to carry that attention and compassion beyond October.
