The Difference Between Juvéderm and Restylane

Dermal fillers are a popular choice for those looking to improve the appearance of wrinkles. Both products work quickly, and the procedures are considered safe for most people. There are many similarities between Juvéderm and Restylane, but notable differences as well. Depending on your needs and skincare goals, our providers at Upkeep Medical Spa can help you learn more about fillers and which treatment is best for you.

What is Juvéderm?

Juvéderm is a gel-based filler made from hyaluronic acid. It is designed to treat wrinkles in adult patients, and there are different "types" of Juvéderm for different locations on the face. For example, some are designed for the mouth (including the lips and area around the mouth), while others are used to reduce the appearance of fine lines around your nose and mouth. Today, all Juvéderm injections contain lidocaine to help minimize discomfort during treatment and remove the need for a separate anesthetic.

What is Restylane?

Restylane is also a filler with a hyaluronic acid-base. Restylane injections are used to address the areas around the mouth and eyes. They can also be used to enhance your lips, add volume to your cheeks and reduce wrinkling on the backs of your hands. Some versions of Restylane injections (specifically Restylane Lyft) also include lidocaine.

Comparing Juvéderm and Restylane

In general, both procedures take just minutes to perform, and the results from both products are seen quite soon after your procedure is complete. Restylane injections take between 15 and 60 minutes per session to perform, and while some results are visible within a few days, it may take slightly longer for the full effect of Restylane fillers to appear. Restylane fillers generally last between six and 18 months. Although Restylane products are used in many of the same areas as Juvéderm, it is particularly effective around the lips, nose, and cheeks.

Juvéderm, on the other hand, requires multiple injections for each treatment area instead of a single injection. Combined, these injections take around 15 to 60 minutes. Juvéderm results typically appear faster than Restylane and last between one and two years. Juvéderm works well for bags under your eyes. It is also effective for reducing wrinkles around your mouth and plumping the lips.

The cost of Juvéderm and Restylane injections will depend on the areas treated and your provider's price based on your location. Neither product is covered by insurance, so it is important to discuss your treatment needs and goals with the professionals at Upkeep Medical Spa so you know in advance what your out-of-pocket expenses might be. Although Juvéderm generally costs more upfront, the results tend to last longer, leading to less out-of-pocket cost. Both products require non-invasive procedures to administer, so no recovery or "downtime" is needed after your appointment.
