The Difference Between Botox and Dysport

Everyone experiences aging differently. For some, wrinkles are noticeable at a specific angle or in certain lighting conditions. Others may notice wrinkles and fine lines no matter what. Wrinkles and associated signs of aging will inevitably occur for everyone. Unfortunately, there is no way to stop the aging process. However, certain cosmetic interventions can pause the clock for a time and help you regain a more youthful appearance. At Upkeep Med Spa, we offer a range of injectable solutions designed to help you smooth out those undesirable wrinkles and fine lines.

 What is Botox?

Botox is one of (if not the) the most popular cosmetic injectable on the market today. Botox is a drug produced from the botulinum toxin. When used for cosmetic purposes, Botox injections work by weakening or paralyzing specific muscles or nerves. Because the affected muscle can no longer contract, it relaxes your wrinkles, softening their appearance. Botox injections are commonly used on crow's feet, forehead lines, and frown lines. Botox injections will not help improve the appearance of wrinkles caused by sun damage or "gravity."

What is Dysport?

Dysport is also derived from the botulinum toxin. Like, Botox it is used to treat facial wrinkles by relaxing the muscles under the skin. In general, Dysport injections are often less costly than Botox injections but do not last as long.

How are Botox and Dysport Different?

Both Dysport and Botox are beneficial treatments used to address and prevent wrinkles in adults looking to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on their skin. They are both non-invasive procedures, easily completed at your provider's office during a short session. It is important to remember that neither treatment will permanently remove wrinkles, and both require ongoing follow-up appointments to maintain lasting results.

A critical difference between Dysport and Botox is the type of wrinkle they address. Botox injections can be used on three locations (the forehead, crow's feet, and glabellar lines). On the other hand, Dysport is only approved for use on glabellar lines. Glabellar lines are found between your eyebrows. They are the lines that extend upward towards the forehead. They are often called "frown lines," as they are most noticeable when a person frowns. Dysport can help treat glabellar lines. However, it is only recommended for moderate to severe cases.

Another difference between the procedures is the time it takes for results to appear and how long your results last. With Dysport injections, you can expect to see results within a couple of days. Results from Dysport injections typically last between three and four months. Botox injections can take up to a month before results are seen; however, the results from Botox procedures last several months (sometimes up to six months or more).

Both Dysport and Botox injections are intended for adult patients with moderate to severe facial lines. It is important to talk to a skincare professional at Upkeep Med Spa to determine if your skincare needs can be addressed using Botox or Dysport injections. They will speak with you about your skin appearance goals and medical history to determine if these procedures are right for you.
