What to Keep In Your Purse: Skincare Edition

Good skincare is essential, and although many people focus on carefully caring for their skin in the morning and before bed, what is to be done during the day? Even the best skincare products on the market may not "last" throughout the day. There are several factors that influence how long a product remains effective. Elements of your day, such as going to the gym, sweating, sun exposure, make-up reapplication, touching your face, and more, impact your skincare. While keeping all of your skincare essentials with you throughout the day is likely not a feasible option, there are a few skincare essentials you should always keep in your purse.

 Moisturizer with SPF

As soon as you leave your home, your skin is exposed to the environment, including the sun's harmful rays. Most SPF products are designed for reapplication during the day, especially if you wash your face or sweat. Choosing a moisturizer with an SPF of at least 30 (higher if you have particularly sensitive skin) and keeping a small container of it in your purse ensures that you are well-prepared no matter where your day takes you. Also, an SPF-containing moisturizer provides the benefits of two products in one eliminating the need to bring along your moisturizer and a sunscreen.

Face Wash or Wipes

Dirt and grime buildup on your skin throughout the day. Your daily activities, where you live and work, and what you eat all contribute to the condition of your skin as the day progresses. It is not uncommon to feel the grit and grime of the day on your face well before it is time for nightly skincare. Carrying a container of face wash or even a cleansing wipe in your bag can help rid your skin of pore-clogging oils and dirt which reduces new or worsening acne breakouts and other skin issues.

Face Mist

If you need a quick pick-me-up for your skin (and senses) mid-day, a refreshing, moisturizing facial mist is an excellent purse item. For days when your skin feels particularly dry and tight, a moisturizing mist can help your face feel refreshed and hydrated without having to use a heavier moisturizer. This is especially beneficial on hot and sunny days when your skin may already feel greasy due to sweat and natural oils. A quick spritz of facial mist can give you the added moisture you need after cleansing without adding more weight.

Lip Balm

Dry, chapped lips can occur at any time of the year. During the summer, exposure to the sun and wind will dry out sensitive skin, including the skin around and on your lips. Similarly, harsh winter air will do the same. If you wear lipstick or colored lip gloss as part of your daily make-up routine, dry and flaky lip skin makes it impossible to apply it smoothly. Also, chapped lips are prone to cracking and bleeding, which can be painful. Carrying a tube of moisturizing lip balm in your purse can help prevent (and heal) chapped lips. Make sure your lip balm contains SPF, as your lips are also at risk for sunburn, no matter the season.

Hand Cream

You use your hands for many things throughout the day. Today, people wash and sanitize their hands more than ever before. While this practice is vital to controlling the spread of germs and bacteria, it is certainly not ideal for keeping your skin soft and moist. Cleaners, sanitizers (which contain alcohol), and environmental toxins all affect your skin, including your hands. Carrying a travel-size tube of your favorite hand cream lets you moisturize your hands whenever they feel dry and itchy.
