UPKEEP and the benefits of Turmeric

Turmeric has been used by South Asian brides preparing for their wedding days for over a century. It is said to brighten and beautify the skin, as well as protect the bride from any bad omens. With a myriad of benefits it’s no wonder this auspicious ingredient has become wildly popular. From Turmeric Golden Lattes to Turmeric Face masks, this gorgeous bright yellow root is sprouting up everywhere and is here to stay.

Not only is this root great to add to curries and fresh pressed juices, but it is also highly effective when used topically. Turmeric contains a powerhouse ingredient called Curcumin, Curcumin has a multitude of proven benefits and has been deemed non-toxic and low risk by the FDA. With its bright yellow hue it’s pretty much the golden child of all skincare ingredients.

Most skincare junkies know that antioxidants are a key factor in skin health and wellness. Antioxidants protect your body from ‘free radicals’. Free radicals are considered a health risk because they attack healthy cells, proteins and DNA. They come from a range of sources like sun exposure, heavy metal exposure, unhealthy diet, medications, or smoking. Consequences of free radicals range from affecting the appearance and strength of your skin to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease and even cancer. Turmeric is wonderful because its active ingredient Curcumin is a potent antioxidant which not only can neutralize free radicals but also has the ability to boost your bodies natural antioxidants! So what does this have to do with skin? Healthy skin cells can suffer from oxidative damage which causes uneven skin tone and texture as well as fine lines and wrinkles.

Turmeric also has amazing anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation can be seen in conditions as severe as cancer and heart disease, and can also cause unsightly hyperpigmentation on the skin following acne or other injuries to the dermis. Turmeric can prevent inflammation before it happens as well as treat inflammation by stopping it in its tracks. Applying turmeric to the skin is a soothing way to brighten post inflammatory hyper pigmentation scars and reveal a gorgeous, even skin tone. I’m all about getting closer to #wokeuplikethis skin goals!

With nearly zero negative side effects, whether you choose to drink it, cook it, or use it in a face mask,  turmeric is a robust ingredient to add into your skin care routine. My personal favorite way to incorporate turmeric into my skincare routine is by using a weekly mask containing this ancient spice and other invigorating minerals, which you can purchase at UPKEEP! How will you be incorporating this root into your beauty routine?
